Reading, talking and writing. They go together and together they build a strong reader.
After all those ‘read alouds’ and all the talk about stories and rhymes and facts and other interesting stuff, kids want to write their own story.
Provide lots of opportunities for pre-schoolers to play with writing – crayons, pencils, washable markers, post it notes, paper.
Writing helps them connect what they hear in words to the symbols that represent those words.
They will also want to read what they wrote.
Here a ‘five year old’ is reading a note she wrote to ward off burglars.
She doesn’t want them to know about her Halloween candy.
She knows a lot about how reading works: about letter formation and spelling, word spacing, and reading from left to right.
Encourage creativity- not correctness with your pre-schooler.
